Supreme Court questions CBI probe into builder–bank nexus, seeks time-bound investigation

15 Mar 2026

The Supreme Court has raised concerns over the progress of the investigation into the alleged nexus between real estate developers and financial institutions accused of cheating homebuyers. The court questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation for filing a chargesheet without custodial interrogation of the accused and cautioned that such a step could appear superficial. It directed the agency to conduct a proper and time-bound probe and submit a clear timeline for completion. The bench also rejected the suggestion of multiple state police investigations, stating that the case requires a unified approach due to the large number of affected homebuyers.Read more

Maharashtra registration department considers district-wide processing of tenant agreements across sub-registrar offices in Pune

Pune News Desk

14 Mar 2026

The Maharashtra property registration department is considering allowing online leave-and-licence (tenant) agreements in Pune district to be processed by any sub-registrar office rather than restricting approvals to the office within the property's jurisdiction. The proposal follows complaints over delays and a backlog of tenant registration applications across Pune's registration offices. Officials reported that more than 3,000 documents were pending recently, with some approvals taking up to 10 days despite a mandated 24-hour processing timeline. The proposed change would align Pune with the state's one district, one registration approach already implemented in districts such as Mumbai and Thane. Authorities said the initiative aims to distribute workloads more evenly across offices and reduce processing delays. The proposal is currently under consideration as officials address software compatibility issues between city and rural registration systems.Read more

Karnataka RERA tribunal rules Bengaluru Development Authority qualifies as a ‘promoter’ under the Real Estate Act

Bangalore News Desk

14 Mar 2026

The Karnataka Real Estate Appellate Tribunal has ruled that the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) qualifies as a promoter under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016, dismissing the authority's appeal against an earlier order of the Karnataka Real Estate Regulatory Authority (KRERA). The tribunal held that BDA must comply with the provisions of the Real Estate Act when it develops and sells residential layouts or buildings to the public. The case relates to the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout project in Bengaluru, a large residential layout spread across about 4,043 acres that has faced prolonged delays affecting thousands of allottees. The tribunal upheld KRERA's directive requiring the project to be registered under the RERA framework and rejected BDA's argument that it should be exempt because it operates as a statutory planning authority.Read more

Over 150 landowners and developers booked in Nashik for alleged evasion of mandatory EWS housing quota through forged land records

14 Mar 2026

Police in Nashik have registered a cheating and forgery case against more than 150 landowners and developers in connection with alleged violations of Maharashtra's inclusive housing regulations. The case, filed at Sarkarwada police station following a land records department complaint, stems from an inquiry into residential projects that allegedly bypassed the mandatory 20% reservation for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) housing in developments exceeding 4,000 sq m. Investigators found that several developers and landowners had allegedly split large land parcels into smaller plots through fabricated documents to remain below the regulatory threshold and avoid allocating EWS units. The projects fall within the jurisdiction of Nashik Municipal Corporation, where such reserved housing is required to be handed over to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). Authorities said more than 100 projects across the city are under scrutiny as the investigation continues.Read more
