12 Mar 2026

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has approved an amendment to the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code that allows uncultivated grazing land, known as gairan land, within municipal areas to be used for public infrastructure projects. The state government said the change could make nearly 7,700 hectares of such land available for development, mainly in municipalities and smaller towns that face land shortages for civic works. The bill limits the use of these lands strictly to public purposes and bars commercial exploitation.
