The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced mandatory independent geotechnical oversight for foundations of high-rise buildings, aiming to strengthen construction safety in the city's dense urban areas. Buildings taller than 180 m must now receive clearance from the High-Rise Committee (HRC) at key construction stages, ensuring soil investigations, shoring, and excavation practices meet rigorous standards. This move follows past foundation and shoring failures, and includes empanelled senior engineers from academia and industry. It represents the first municipal-level geotechnical requirement in Asia and could serve as a model for other growing cities.Read more

The Kanpur district administration has reclaimed a prime Nazul property in Civil Lines after an investigation revealed it was sold illegally in 2012. Originally allotted to the Beri family in 1982, the land had neither lease renewal nor rent payment for years. Heirs of the original lessees misrepresented it as freehold in the sale deed to a private builder. The District Magistrate ordered government re-entry, directing the plot, valued at around INR 24.77 crore (approximately USD 3 million), to be re-registered under government ownership, with oversight assigned to the Nazul and tehsildar officials.Read more

The Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) has initiated plans to mobilise approximately INR 1,000 crore by auctioning vacant land parcels through an online bidding process across several layouts in Mysuru. The authority intends to develop residential sites of varying dimensions on around 150 acres of land located in established layouts such as Vijayanagar, Lalithadri Nagar, Dattagalli, JP Nagar and Hebbal before putting them up for auction. The move aims to generate financial resources for upcoming urban development initiatives, including new residential layouts, group housing schemes and infrastructure works such as the peripheral ring road. The decision follows a reduction in revenue streams after several layouts developed by the authority were transferred to local civic bodies, which resulted in the loss of certain property-related charges and cess collections.Read more

Uttar Pradesh's housing department has issued a directive for real estate projects spanning 10 acres or more to reserve 1 % of their land for water bodies. This initiative is aimed at enhancing groundwater recharge, diverting surface runoff, and enabling the reuse of water for non-potable purposes such as cleaning, landscaping, and irrigation. Developers are also required to minimize concrete in parks and green spaces, and use permeable materials for walkways and jogging tracks. Surveyors and geomatics experts will help locate these water bodies at natural low points to ensure effective water collection.Read more

The Odisha Real Estate Appellate Tribunal (OREAT) has upheld a penalty of INR 3 lakh imposed on a developer for handing over flats in a housing project in Gadakana, Bhubaneswar, without obtaining mandatory approvals, including an occupancy certificate. The tribunal dismissed the promoter's appeal in an order issued earlier this month, affirming an earlier decision by the Odisha Real Estate Regulatory Authority (ORERA). The regulatory authority had penalised the promoter for violating provisions of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016, which requires project registration before marketing or sale. The developer had argued that the project was completed before the RERA framework came into force and therefore did not require registration. However, the tribunal found inconsistencies in the completion certificate submitted and concluded that the promoter had transferred possession without fulfilling statutory requirements.Read more

Residents of several housing societies in Mohali have demanded urgent action to resume construction of the long-delayed PR-6 road, a planned arterial corridor intended to improve connectivity between Airport Road and the Kharar Landran Road. Members of the Committee of Resident Welfare Associations and Societies (CORWAS) staged a protest outside a private developer's office in Sector 119 in the past week, alleging that the project has remained stalled due to a legal dispute involving the builder. Residents said the road alignment was earlier used in marketing nearby real estate projects but construction has not progressed, affecting thousands of households across the Mega Mohali area. The matter is currently before the court, with the next hearing scheduled for early April. Authorities have not commented on the issue, citing the case's sub judice status.Read more

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will take direct charge of daily maintenance for its residential flats starting early April 2026. The move covers flats constructed before 2021, where day-to-day upkeep had previously been handled by resident welfare associations or flat owners. Under this system, the authority will provide services such as security, cleaning of common areas, lift and electrical maintenance, minor repairs, and upkeep of water tanks and STP-treated water lines. Flat owners will pay quarterly service charges per square metre, with interest applied on late payments. This initiative aims to ensure consistent maintenance and enhance living conditions in DDA housing pockets.Read more

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Ghaziabad district administration to remove encroachments on a lake in Pasunda village, Loni, where a residential colony has been developed. The NGO Society for Voice of Human Rights and Justice alleged that Mahalaxmi Land and Finance Company altered revenue records to allow construction on land officially recorded as a lake under survey number 1564. Earlier reports from the administration were incomplete. The NGT clarified that ongoing High Court proceedings on ownership do not restrict its review of environmental aspects, and scheduled further hearings for late March.Read more

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani addressed concerns regarding the Coastal Road (North) project, noting that decisions involve multiple statutory approvals and cannot be made by a single authority. The project has faced criticism from citizen groups over its impact on nearly 45,000 mangroves. The Bombay High Court continues to monitor compliance, especially compensatory afforestation measures. At the International Arboriculture Conference, experts emphasized integrating urban development with ecological preservation, while officials outlined plans for tree care initiatives, modern arboriculture practices, and citizen engagement in protecting urban greenery.Read more
